Plarium doesn’t play games with unmanaged devices

SUMMARY

While Plarium’s 500 million online gamers battled to conquer evil in games such as ‘Vikings: War of Clans’ and ‘RAID: Shadow Legends’, the global gaming provider was fighting a battle closer to home, with its cybersecurity held in the balance. The organisation was being put at risk through contractors connecting to its corporate applications via unmanaged devices and commercial browsers.

Demand was surging, and Plarium’s limited visibility and control over apps and data made it vulnerable to phishing attacks, advanced malware, and other cyberthreats. But now, thanks to a breakthrough natively integrated secure browser, Plarium’s hundreds of contractors, hybrid workers, and customer support staff are all protected by fast, frictionless security. Prisma Access Browser has brought agility and control to Plarium’s business.

Challenge

Point security reactive not proactive

Plarium needed a simple and secure solution to connect its hybrid workforce, increase visibility and control, and safeguard against threats. The gaming developer also needed to consider how it could streamline onboarding and reduce costs.

  • Contractors worldwide previously connected to Plarium’s applications from complicated and inefficient virtual private networks (VPN) installed on their unmanaged personal devices.
  • These devices posed significant security risks, such as attacks via the web, malicious extensions, and user errors.
  • Shipping managed laptops to these third parties was prohibitively expensive to implement and manage.
  • Other browser isolation/web proxy/VDI solutions were too complicated to deploy, integrate, and manage. This complexity might have tempted users to seek out alternative ways to connect with Plarium, which would put the organisation at risk.
SOLUTION

Let the games begin

Plarium deployed Palo Alto Networks Prisma® Access Browser to provide contractors with secure, controlled access to critical resources. The secure browser was chosen for its lightweight deployment, native user experience, and robust security capabilities. For example, Plarium can protect contractors’ browsing activities, isolating corporate SaaS and internal applications from everything else happening on unmanaged devices.
  • Extends SASE security

Plarium was already using Prisma Access to support direct-to-app connectivity. Prisma Access Browser extends the comprehensive security and seamless user experience of Prisma SASE to contractors’ unmanaged endpoints. Together, AI-powered threat prevention and browser-based DLP ensure contractors can develop and support Plarium’s portfolio of games while mitigating potential risks to the organisation.

For example, Plarium previously had zero visibility into contractors’ applications activity when they connected via the VPN. But now, using the secure browser, the team has significantly improved visibility into the apps and data contactors use. “Prisma Access Browser is the ideal lightweight secure browser, with a native look and feel and robust security. We’re now much more safeguarded against a spectrum of threats on unmanaged devices,” says Oren Zenescu, CISO, Plarium.

  • Simplifies operational security

Plarium benefits from centralised control, easy policy setting and improved visibility across all unmanaged devices, streamlining management and optimising IT efficiency.

For example, the SecOps team can now secure devices 100% faster than before, streamlining onboarding, accelerating contractors’ time to value, and freeing up security resources to focus on other tasks. Overall, the secure browser has contributed to a 50% increase in day-to-day remote access management productivity.

    Enhances user experience

Contractors can effortlessly access corporate applications from their personal devices without exposing Plarium to risk. They need only download the installer, perform the wizard-based install, and authenticate themselves via the integrated single sign-on (SSO) system.

Plarium also has the flexibility to configure unique security policies, such as data protection. For example, it can block the option to download or copy personally identifiable information (PII).

“Too often, security interferes with the user experience. Not in this case. Prisma Access Browser is frictionless. There’s no difference between using this secure browser and Chrome,” says Oren.

  • Reduces the cost of operation

Prisma Access Browser has contributed to a significant reduction in cost. First, Plarium avoids the slow, prohibitively expensive process of shipping corporate laptops to globally dispersed contractors. Second, Plarium has eliminated the VPN overhead, which was approximately 50% more expensive than the secure browser solution.
